Today's Recommendation is the 2001 movie "The Man Who Wasn't There", directed by Joel Coen, and written by both Ethan and Joel Coen.
The movie stars Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand, and James Gandolfini. Scarlett Johansson has a small spot as well.
Ed Crane (Thornton) is a barber who is attempting to seek more than life has to offer him. The movie is set in 1949 Northern California. The noir of the film is authentic, and can be felt. Crane's wife (McDormand) begins cheating on him, and Crane schemes to blackmail her lover, encountering all the things than can and will go wrong.
Thoughts: Billy Bob Thornton not only plays the part, he IS Crane. Every facial expression, every twitch makes you think he is living the part. The twists and turns of the suspense are easily followed, but unpredictable. If you like noir films, and the Coen brothers, this should be a gem for you as well!
